This principle is based on the velocity of ultrasonic sound. Top-mounted, the sensor head emits an ultrasonic pulse and precisely measures the round-trip time between the sensor and the surface of the fluid. The transit time of this burst is either reduced or extended and is proportional to the tank level. Since the speed of sound in air is fixed, an accurate calculation of the tank level can be made.

Mounted through the tank wall or submerged from the top of the tank, a Signet hydrostatic sensor measures the weight of a fluid column. The change and, therefore, the pressure at the sensor is proportional to the change in the tank level. A capillary tube in the cable ensures that changes in the atmospheric pressure are compensated.

Type 2280 Tuning Forks are suitable for level detection of liquids or granular, powdered solids. Mounted on tanks, these devices can control filling and emptying just as well, generating fail-safe alarms that provide overfill or dry run protection. The operating principle is based on the electronic circuit exciting the fork probe making it vibrate. As the medium reaches and covers the fork its vibration changes. The electronic device senses changes in vibration and provides an output signal after a specified delay. 

The side-mounted float switch uses a hinged plastic float with an internal magnet that rises and falls with the liquid, actuating an encapsulated reed contact as the level changes. The Type 2285, by contrast, floats on the fluid surface thanks to its low density and triggers when its internal contact reaches a ±45° switching angle.

The Multipoint Switch is based on the conductivity principle and can be applied to liquids with conductivity higher than 10 μS/cm. The probes must be placed in the tank for level detection. The probe length should be adjusted in accordance with the level to be detected. Filling liquid in the tank will change the electrical conductivity between the reference probe and the outer probes. The established connection will be converted and activated to provide the output.
