A secure DN900 connection for potable water supply
Project background
The Upper Franconia Long-Distance Water Supply (FWO) treats raw water from Bavaria’s first potable water reservoir in the Ködeltal, an area known for its exceptionally low pollution levels. At the Rieblich treatment plant, raw water is processed into high-quality potable water and distributed across the region via 20 pumping stations and 25 elevated tanks. Supplying around one quarter of Upper Franconia’s municipalities, the FWO continuously invests in infrastructure reliability. As part of a long-term modernization program, outdated steel pipelines and valves in the plant required replacement with durable stainless-steel systems.
Selected technical solution
Given the DN900 pipe diameter and the need for reliable transitions between old and new materials, FWO selected the proven MULTI/JOINT® 3000 Plus solution. The DN900 flange adaptors with EPDM sealing enable secure flange connections between stainless-steel and existing steel pipelines. Their innovative sealing and restraint system accommodates different pipe materials, angular deflections up to 8° per side, and simplifies installation even under tight spatial constraints. The solution eliminated the need for onsite welding and ensured a quick, safe and simple installation with standard tools.
Achieved improvement
The dual pipeline replacement over a total length of 30 meters was completed in two compact three-week phases, without interrupting the supply of water. Thanks to accurate 3D scanning, prefabrication and the flexible MULTI/JOINT® system, even heavy DN900 components could be installed efficiently in the confined pipe cellar. The corrosion-resistant Resicoat® epoxy coating ensures a service life of over 50 years while minimizing maintenance requirements. For the operator, the result is long-term operational security, reduced lifecycle costs and a fully reliable large-diameter connection.
