A modern and safe water network to reduce water waste
Project background
The project by Publiacqua and GF is part of a major modernization effort for the water network serving Florence, Prato and Pistoia. It involves replacing a more than 60-year-old pipeline in a critical area of central Florence to create a safer, more efficient and reliable system. The work includes installing new ductile iron pipelines equipped with MULTI/JOINT® technology to reduce water losses, improve service continuity and ensure long-term sustainability for the local community.
Selected technical solution
The project covers an 11.2 km² area and includes the installation of 225 meters of DN800 and DN150 ductile-iron pipelines equipped with MULTI/JOINT® restraint fittings. These were chosen for their high performance in complex urban environments, offering reliability, flexibility and rapid installation. The solution enables precise management of service interruptions while protecting nearby green areas. Immediate material availability through local partner SDM Calenzano ensured seamless logistics and adherence to the project schedule. The proven performance of MULTI/JOINT® made it the ideal choice.
Achieved improvement
The intervention strengthens the regional water infrastructure by providing a modern, resilient pipeline system capable of delivering 250 liters per second. The new installation significantly reduces water losses and enhances operational safety, ensuring long-term network reliability. Thanks to efficient project planning and flexible components, work proceeded with minimal disruption to traffic and urban areas. Once connected to the other pipelines, the upgraded system will offer improved service continuity, greater efficiency and increased protection of a vital resource — bringing clear benefits to both residents and public administration.
