MULTI/JOINT® ensures the reliability of an essential system in a high-demand environment below sea level

In Edam-Volendam, the Netherlands, Water Board Hollands Noorderkwartier is replacing a critical sewage pressure pipe as part of a major infrastructure upgrade. GF Waga proudly supported this effort with the installation of the robust MULTI/JOINT® 3000 Plus DN1000 fitting. Now installed, the fitting is expected to remain in place for at least 50 years, securing the reliability of this essential system in a high-demand environment below sea level.

Reliable sewage upgrade with MULTI/JOINT® 3000 Plus

Project background

The existing sewage pressure pipeline between the pumping station in the village of Volendam and the treatment plant in the village of Katwoude was due for replacement. Made of asbestos and technically outdated, the pipe could no longer meet the increasing discharge demands of the area. Additionally, its route through non-municipal gardens and under mature trees made maintenance challenging and disruptive. The solution? A new HDPE pipeline, rerouted through municipal land. This thoughtful re-routing minimizes disturbance to residents and ensures that Water Board Hollands Noorderkwartier can access and maintain the pipeline more efficiently and with less impact on the surrounding environment in the decades ahead.

Selected technical solution

To minimize surface disruption, the new pipe system was installed using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), a trenchless method ideal for long-distance, deep installations. To address the weak soil conditions below sea level, the pipeline and valve sections were mounted on piles. This ensures long-term stability. For maximum reliability and adaptability, the MULTI/JOINT® 3000 Plus DN1000 fitting was used. Its ability to cover up to eight degrees on either side allows flexibility in alignment and efficient handling of potential ground settlement.

Achieved improvement

With the new setup, long-term performance and reliability have been significantly improved. The MULTI/JOINT® 3000 Plus enables quick installation while accommodating ground settlement, which is critical in soft, below sea level lying areas. By rerouting the system to municipal land and using advanced installation techniques, the project minimizes long-term disruption and ensures safe, accessible infrastructure. This strategic investment extends the life of the sewage line and simplifies ongoing maintenance for decades to come.
