Georg Fischer Piping Systems presents non-corroding solutions at Seatrade Cruise Shipping 2011

Mar 14, 2011 7:00 AM

Plastic piping systems offer a non-corroding solution to a wide range of applications on cruisers: namely, hot and cold water, grey and black water, water treatment, air-conditioning, non-essential technical waters, water tank venting and service air. Besides their non-corrosive properties, plastic pipe systems offer additional benefits. They are quick to install with no hot working, making them ideal for retrofit projects on existing vessels, either in dry dock or in service.
GF Piping Systems provides worldwide support: Wherever your vessel is in service, GF offers technical back-up and logistics support all around the globe.

Plastic systems from Georg Fischer, such as FUSEAL Sea Drain, PVC and ABS, offer an excellent price/performance ratio for grey and black water systems. A minimum amount of tooling and training required for the jointing technology combined with ease of installation in areas where space is limited make plastic systems a breeze to work with and a cost-efficient alternative to standard metal push-fit systems on the market.

Water treatment

For the treatment of grey and black water, fresh and cooling water as well as swimming pools, plastic systems (PVC-U / PVC-C) are already state-of-the-art for similar installations on land.

ABS is a halogen-free system with a wide range of transition fittings, manual and actuated valves to cover all your requirements for water treatment in shipbuilding. Whether for luxury liners, ferries or general container vessels, ABS offers a compact, economical solution for the piping systems on board.

Hot and cold water distribution

Plastic piping systems are an excellent solution for all types of water distribution – from chilled water to warm water up to +70°C. INSTAFLEX PB, iFIT and AQUASYSTEM PP-R from Georg Fischer are complete and corrosion-free systems, which cover your every requirement in this field. INSTAFLEX PB is a flexible pipe system, ideal where fast installations are needed or where space is tight. Prefabrication is an option, reducing installation time on the ship to a minimum. With iFIT - the innovative modular push-fit fitting system - you can drastically cut time and costs.

Seawater and fresh water cooling (non-essential systems)

PE 100 and ABS are plastic materials that can be implemented at temperatures from –40°C to +60°C. In standard use, cold water distribution networks are susceptible to corrosion. Plastic piping systems offer significant advantages in this respect. In addition, PE 100 and ABS save weight and installation time. These are virtually no-maintenance, complete plastic systems that include plastic valves and the corresponding measurement and control equipment as well.

No corrosion

Extreme conditions, whether on the outside or the inside, present no problems for plastic piping systems, as opposed to metal. Incrustation and deposits are comparably slight due to the smooth inner surface. Corrosion is not such an issue with plastic piping systems, even from salty sea air. Corrosion protection, for example with anti-corrosive paint, is not necessary. A lifetime of 25 years is guaranteed for plastic piping systems in shipbuilding, provided that temperature, pressure and fluid concentration requirements are observed.
