If high germ count or pathogens are detected by drinking water sampling, this is usually due to a neglect of the preventive measures. In addition, there is an "improper operation" of the drinking water installation over longer periods of time.

If necessary, performing intervention should be minimised and only used as a last resort to ensure a high drinking water quality. Particular attention must be paid to an overall consideration of the drinking water installation. Particularly in existing buildings, care must be taken to ensure that the preventive measures, at least in the cellar distribution and in the risers, are implemented before the intervention measures.

Measure 1: Thermal disinfection

In order to be able to perform thermal disinfection in the hot water distribution, the hydraulic adjustment must be available over all single strands in normal operation. The thermal disinfection is often carried out from 01:00 to 04:00 when taps are infrequently used. It is recommended to carry out the hot water rinsing individually in series so that the heating of the shaft distribution can be limited. If hot water is run at a temperature of 75 °C for an extended period of time, the cold drinking water will heat up to the critical temperature zone within a few hours, which in turn will produce a counterproductive effect resulting in microbiological growth in cold water.

Contaminations in drinking water installations are generally detected during periodic sampling and only affect part of the installation. If further sampling is carried out, the germination may be at a lower level, but spreads over the entire drinking water distribution. Thus, intervention is necessary not only in the hot water, but also in the cold drinking water, since the microbiological base load flows from the cold water into the hot water. For the use of a chemical disinfection with the preservation of the entire drinking water distribution appropriate preventive measures have to be implemented, the hydraulic adjustment in the strands and the periodic rinsing is mandatory.
Only a cleaning of the installation before chemical disinfection will have a corresponding long-term effect. As far as the use of a disinfecting solution is concerned, the electro-activated disinfectant solution from Hycleen Des 30 is recommended. Long-term tests by GF JRG over more than five years show that an electro-activated disinfecting solution with a proportion of sodium hypochlorite can be used in all materials of the drinking water installation. With GF domestic appliances, there are no restrictions on the service life of the dosing in the drinking water regulation, which in particular benefits the property operator.
